An iOS app with 500+ home-cooking recipes that works offline: find recipes from what you have, scale servings, cook step by step and build a shopping list.
The idea
A fast, reliable answer to “what should I cook today?” that doesn’t need an internet connection. Tarifçe (“little recipe book” in Turkish) brings together more than 500 recipes, from home cooking and air-fryer dishes to soups and desserts.
From ChefMasterAI to Tarifçe
The app launched in December 2024 as ChefMasterAI, an AI assistant that suggested recipes based on your ingredients. In version 3.0 we redesigned it from scratch with a different approach: tried-and-tested, fixed recipes instead of AI answers that change every time, and content built into the app instead of a server and an internet connection. To match the new approach we renamed it Tarifçe.
What it offers
- 500+ recipes, offline: 15 categories and 7 cuisines, from Turkish to Italian and Asian.
- Pantry: Pick your ingredients; recipes are grouped into “you have everything”, “1 missing” and “2 missing”.
- Smart search: Filters for time, difficulty, category, cuisine and cooking method, with search that ignores Turkish diacritics.
- Servings and method: Amounts are recalculated for 1–12 servings; hob, oven, air fryer and pressure cooker each get their own times and temperatures.
- Cooking mode: Large-type steps, a timer on every step, a notification when time is up and a screen that stays on while you cook.
- Shopping list: Add a recipe’s ingredients in one tap; identical items are merged and sorted by aisle.
- Details: Favourites, a daily recipe suggestion notification, approximate nutrition facts and dark mode.
How we built it
We built it with React Native and TypeScript. Recipes are written in Markdown files instead of code; a build script validates every recipe (ingredient dictionary, units, times, icons, duplicate titles) and produces a single data file bundled with the app. Instead of photos we used Microsoft Fluent Emoji icons and category colours, which kept the app small and every recipe consistent. Revenue comes from Google AdMob ads and a one-time “Ad-free” purchase.
